DAAN GRIMBERGEN

@vinylizedcollection

He was brought up on Soul, telling me his father was a big fan of Sam Cooke, and you can see those Soul roots have spread throughout his collection of records. Like most collectors of Daan’s age, he is trying to track down those rare ‘90s releases that were pressed in so little numbers but thankfully, a lot of releases from that era are starting to see represses.

Daan started his vinyl only Instagram page back in 2018 and has amassed quite the following since. It’s one of my favourite vinyl profiles and I’d encourage you to give him a follow and spread the vinyl love!

Do you have a favourite genre of music you listen to?

I mainly listen to Indie Rock, Blues, Soul and old-school Hip Hop from the golden ‘90s. I like these varied genres. I can enjoy a good classic Hip Hop beat with good lyrics, a good guitar solo by Eric Clapton or the golden soul voice of Sam Cooke.

How did you come to have such varied tastes?

Sometimes I hear many influences from artists in different genres. Especially with hip-hop and

soul. I loved as a teenager punk rock-bands like Sum 41, Green Day, Blink-182 and Good Charlotte. Nowadays thought, I don’t listen to that genre anymore, but it is nice to see that I listened different genres in different periods of my life. I think more people recognise that.

How long have you been collecting records and how many records are in the collection

I have currently been collecting records for about six years. First I collected CD’s, but after some time I noticed that LPs were much more special than a simple CD. I have sold many of my CD’s and I bought the albums that I really liked again, but on the vinyl format. I currently have 363 records in my collection so far.

Why vinyl and not another format? How did you get into vinyl?

The great thing about a record is that you hear the album from A to Z, start to end. On Spotify or Deezer you often hear only one song and then you go to the next artist. There is such a wide range of music online meaning usually you no longer hear the whole story of the album. That is a shame in my opinion but I have to say, Spotify is a nice platform to discover new music. Besides that, the cover, the artwork, the record, whether it be black or a nice special coloured one, are what make vinyl special. Nothing is more beautiful than a record in your hands or the smell of an old record from a dusty record store.

What is your favourite ever record?

I have two if that’s ok? The first is “White Ladder” by David Gray. A fantastic folk album released in 1998. During a long internship in Africa. I listened to this album so many times on my iPod Classic. Every song is so beautiful. Every time I listen to this record it brings me back to that fantastic time in Kenya. My all time favourite track is “Babylon” It is such a sad song, but his voice is beautiful. Especially at a live performance. and I’ve seen him play several times now. Finally they released “White Ladder” for the first time on vinyl this year thankfully almost 22 years after it’s release. The second record is “Harlequin Dream” by Boy & Bear released in 2013. A band from Australia with a really smooth Indie Folk sound. Every song is so nice on this record and means something to me. I really like the lead singer, Dave Hosking’s voice. I have a little bit of sad feelings when I listen to a few songs on this album right now though as my ex girlfriend and I fell in love when we were listening to this album together. But unfortunately, we are not together anymore I also have nice thoughts about that precious time we shared though. It is so special how happy you can be with someone in your life in combination with a coffee in the morning, dancing in the room and your favourite record that you both like spinning on the turntable and those are moments I will never forget. Music can bring you back to the happiest times or the sad and tough moments in life. It can bring memories back to life. That is why music is so special and important in life.

What set up do you have?

I have a very nice Teac BT- 400 walnut turntable, with a Onkyo receiver and Dali Zenzor speakers. It’s a really good sounding set-up.

How do you organise your collection? Do you use Discogs at all?

Yes, I use Discogs to track my value of my collection and how many records I have in my collection. It’s also useful to see which pressing you have in your collection. I have a section in alphabetical order, but most of the records are divided by genre. Sometimes I can’t even records I’m looking for in my own collection so I may change the way I organise.

What is your thoughts on Instagram as a way for sharing our record collections?

It’s a great way to share your collection with other collectors and vinyl lovers. I started my page “Vinylizedcollection” a year and a half ago and every three or four days I share a nice photo of a record on my page. I have almost 7000 followers currently. Many more collectors are now sharing their collections on Instagram, many more than when I started it a year and a half ago. It’s nice to see more and more people collecting vinyl and follow each other on Instagram and I think it’s a great way to meet new people around the world and share music and pictures of records with each other.
