Why vinyl and not another format and how did you get into vinyl?
This is the format I started with and it’s my favourite. Not so much for the sound as for everything it is. In addition to the music, I think that it’s all the work that goes into it as a format. The artwork, production, where it was recorded. It’s the best way to understand an album as a whole, which is what it is supposed to be, or at least what it should be. No one can deny that it is much better to have a record in hand with all the information available on it than to play an mp3 called “Unknown Artist - Track 7”
How long have you been collecting records?
I’ve collected records my whole life, although unfortunately I’ve gone through all formats before I got back to vinyl. So sadly I’d have had a lot more vinyl than I have now if I hadn’t abandoned the format back in the day but I guess it’s happened to many record collectors.
Can you remember the first record you bought?
I think it was “The Final Countdown” by Europe but can’t be exactly sure?
Were there records in your family growing up?
Yes, in my house there was always music playing but neither my sister nor I were allowed to get too close to the turntable. We had one of those Fisher Price toy turntables so we wouldn’t break the good one.
Do you have a favourite genre of music you listen to?
These last two years or so, I’ve listened to more Blues and Jazz than any other musical genre, although it is not the type of music that I usually show on my Instagram. I still have a lot to learn about those genres but I’m loving what I’m discovering.
Where do you shop for records usually?
I usually buy the albums in record stores whenever possible, but many of the singles that I have in my collection, I have bought them on Discogs or other places on the internet.
What’s the best bargain you have found out digging for records?
I once found a sealed Gorillaz record for €12 that regularly sold for $250. They’ve already reissued it on the last Record Store Day so I guess its price is not insane anymore.
Do you have a certain space or room in your house where you listen to your collection?
Someday I hopefully will but for now we have a fairly large living room where we store the collection which doesn’t bother us too much. Singles are more of a problem at the moment as I haven’t found any definitive storage for them yet.
How do you organise your collection? Do you use Discogs at all?
I follow the exact order of Discogs to organise my records. Yes, around ninety percent of my collection is indexed on Discogs as it makes it so much easier to keep a track of.
And finally, what will happen to your collection when you pass away?
We have an heir on the way...
