SUSANA MASS

@lady_mass_

As a music fanatic, Susana also has a number of CD’s and cassettes and is also a keen live music fan where she buys a lot of records to add to her collection.

I’ve only recently discovered Susana’s Instagram account however it’s clear to see from the amount of followers she has accumulated, Susana is another of the fantastic women that are an intrinsic part of the Vinyl Community on Instagram. I am very grateful that she talked so passionately about her record collection and took time to be part of The Record Collectors Club.

How long have you been collecting records?

I’ve always liked to buy music and I started with cassettes. I was also actively buying music in the era when CD’s were popular. But I started collecting records seriously almost five years ago, after I got a turntable for my fortieth birthday.

How many records do you have in your collection?

Right now I have about 860 vinyl records, 650 CDs and about 50 cassettes. I’m buying music all the time but the number of vinyl records being added to the collection is growing day by day.

Do you have a favourite genre of music you listen to?

I love many different genres, all of them very unique but if I had to choose specific genres then I’d choose, Post Punk or  Dark Wave, Sludge Metal, Doom Metal and Black Metal. Those are the genres I probably listen to most out of my collection.

Do you remember the first record you bought?

Yeah on vinyl it was “Vertikal” by Cult of Luna. But I also remember very well the first tape I bought which was “Wish” by The Cure.

Why vinyl and not another format? How did you get into vinyl?

The reason why I chose vinyl was the gift that I mentioned before, my first turntable for my birthday. I started buying a few special edition records from some of my favourite bands, and soon I fell in love with the format. You appreciate the artwork much more on a vinyl record. It’s the ritual of putting the records on the turntable to spin. Somehow vinyl records are full of magic.

Were there records in your family growing up?

No, I was the first in my family to buy music. I’m the eldest sister, and my parents didn’t really used to listen to music. I really don’t know where this love for music comes from? I’ve enjoyed music since I was a very young girl.

What’s your favourite record shop?

I usually buy most of my records online or on the merchandise stand at concerts, because I don’t have record stores close to home. There are several record labels where I usually buy records from, some of my favourites would be: Season of Mist, Debemur Morti, Vendetta Records, Evil Greed, Nuclear Blast, Svart Records and Pelagic Records.

How big is your wantlist currently?

Oh it’s infinite at the moment. There are so many records I want.

Do you have a designated listening space for your collection?

I usually listen to music in my living room so that’s where my collection is stored as it makes the most sense.

How do you organise your collection? Do you use Discogs at all?

Yes, I use Discogs, it’s great to keep track of all the music you have. At the moment I have all my records in alphabetical order, but I’m seriously thinking about sorting them by genre as well. We’ll see as it takes a long time to organise records usually.

Finally then, what are your thoughts on Instagram as a way for sharing our record collections?

I find it a very interesting platform to discover new albums or bands and to also meet other collectors. Thanks to the Vinyl Community on Instagram I have also found record labels and websites that I did not know and new places to buy wonderful records. If you use it well, and follow the right people, it can be a great tool, not only for sharing your collection, but also for growing it as well.
